Man Buys Girlfriend a Dyson Airwrap, but How He Did It Sparked a Fight

What started as a thoughtful gesture turned into a heated argument after one man’s plan to surprise his girlfriend with a luxury gift went wrong.

In a post shared on Reddit’s Am I the A—— subreddit, the man explained that he and his girlfriend have been together for three years. Both work at the same company and often spend time with colleagues outside of work.

He noted that when they first started dating, they were both in junior positions, but his career has since advanced. After receiving a recent pay raise, he decided to splurge on something his girlfriend had been hinting at: a Dyson Airwrap, which typically sells for around $750.

“She’s been dropping hints about an Airwrap,” he wrote. “I earn good money, and this last week I’ve been doing higher-level duties at work and got a pay rise for the week, so I thought I would splurge.”

The problem came when he wasn’t sure which model to choose. To avoid making a mistake, he asked a female coworker for advice. That decision quickly sparked tension.

“Now my gf is mad because it’s embarrassing having this other person know how much I’m spending,” he explained. “It gives the appearance that my gf is only dating me for my money (friends who have known we dated beforehand know this to be false).” She also questioned why he didn’t ask her best friend for guidance instead.

The Reddit post drew significant attention, with many users weighing in on the couple’s dispute.

“This is the most first-world problem that has ever first-worlded! So much drama,” one commenter wrote.

Another added: “If your girlfriend is getting bent because someone knows what you bought her, I’d be reevaluating the relationship. Creating drama instead of being grateful that you took the time and effort to get the correct item is concerning to me.”
