A woman has turned to Reddit for advice after discovering that her 61-year-old mother-in-law has begun seeing a man nearly half her age.
In her post, the woman explained that she and her husband have been providing significant support to his mother ever since her separation from a previous partner. The couple has been “helping her with debts, finding a new apartment, having her on our phone bill and so on.” Despite their good intentions, the ongoing financial and emotional strain has started to create “stress” in their own relationship.
She also revealed that her mother-in-law had accumulated a surprising amount of debt, even though they believed her ex-partner had been “paying for food and the rent.”
To make matters worse, the mother-in-law insisted on “spoiling” her granddaughter for Easter, despite being asked not to. She reportedly gave the little girl “tons of stuff” — particularly candy and sweets — which her parents had explicitly said no to.

“When we told her no she went on about us spoiling her last joy, because she is alone and sad and that is her only pleasure,” the woman wrote. “But in the end, it’s our kid and we decide about the food.”
Beyond the financial concerns, the woman shared another troubling incident involving her mother-in-law’s online dating activity. During one attempt, she appeared to fall for a scam — even sending pictures of her granddaughter to the person she was speaking with and later lying about it.
“My husband was legit mad and the tone escalated,” the woman recalled.
The latest source of tension came when the mother-in-law announced she was dating again — and her new partner turned out to be 32 years old.
The woman admitted she and her husband had no desire to meet him, writing, “After this whole year of dealing with her stuff we are kind of tired. That guy could be super fine but we don’t want to make the effort to meet him.”
Most commenters on Reddit sided with the woman, with many calling her mother-in-law’s behavior concerning — especially after she shared her granddaughter’s photos with a potential scammer.

“She gave your daughter’s pic to some online dating scam,” one person wrote. “She involved your daughter in a dating scam. Let me make this clearer — SHE PUT YOUR DAUGHTER AT RISK!”
Another commenter added, “That is cutoff material right there. No more happy time with granddaughter. She identified herself as dangerous whether it was unintentional or not, she is dangerous to your daughter’s safety.”
Still, some users encouraged the woman to “meet him and check him out” before making any final judgments.
