A woman took to Reddit for guidance after discovering that her husband had kept a note from a restaurant customer who asked if he was single.
In her post, the 35-year-old explained that her 30-year-old husband works as a server at a local restaurant while she stays home with their children.
One evening, he came home and mentioned that he’d served a large table of women. At the end of the night, one of the customers left him a handwritten note inviting him to message her on Instagram — and even included her social media handles.
“I worked in food service before and know this can happen, not a big deal,” the woman wrote. “What bothers me is that his coworker told him about the note, a manager threw the note in the trash, and then my husband went and got it out of the trash, supposedly to confirm what it said.”
According to her post, her husband then told her that one of his first thoughts was to message the woman to say thanks and clarify that he’s married. “He stated that he didn’t want to be rude by not acknowledging the note,” she continued. “Like, are we serious?!”

Feeling uneasy, the woman asked him several times whether he’d thrown the note away. He insisted that he had.
“He said, of course — why would he need it?” she recalled. “Today I found the note in his stuff. I decided to leave the house.”
When her husband asked where she was going, she threw the note at him and called him a liar. He later called her, upset about how she had spoken to him.
“He said that he brought the note home to show me but was too scared to do it,” she wrote. “Just straight deflection. He’s been lying a lot lately about other things, like sobriety, so my trust was already limited. Am I overreacting by thinking, not only did he consider messaging this stranger to not hurt her feelings, but he lied about disposing of her info?”
The Reddit community largely sided with the woman, urging her to pay close attention to her husband’s behavior moving forward.
“Nah, you’re not overreacting. He lied to you. That’s a big deal. Period,” one commenter wrote. “He dug in the trash for it. I’m getting some serious red flags over here.”
Another user pointed out, “And not just lied once, but more than once — because he was allegedly afraid to tell her at first, so he lied about it not being a big deal. Then he kept it and confirmed he threw it away. You should be afraid to tell your spouse you’re keeping strangers’ numbers because you’re opening the door when you’ve agreed to keep it shut.”
The original poster replied, “I know. Ugh, I know. I feel so dumb.”
