A Florida woman has been charged after allegedly poisoning an 11-month-old boy with antifreeze while babysitting.
Anna Adamo, 59, from Okeechobee, Fla., was arrested in Georgia earlier this month and extradited back to Florida. She was formally charged on Oct. 11 with first-degree attempted murder, aggravated child abuse resulting in aggravated battery, and poisoning food, water, or medicine with intent to kill or injure, according to online court records.
The case dates back to Feb. 12, when Adamo was accused of poisoning an 11-month-old in her care. A probable cause affidavit alleges that the baby arrived at Adamo’s home at 9:30 a.m. in “perfect health” but was later found to be “suffering from the effects of Ethylene Glycol (antifreeze) poisoning, as diagnosed by doctors.”
According to the affidavit, the child needed CPR and life support and was transferred among three hospitals for treatment. “The amount of damage to the child’s renal system is yet to be determined,” the affidavit states.
Adamo told investigators that the baby was never out of her sight, never around other adults, and was not taken into the garage where antifreeze was stored.
The alleged poisoning was discovered that afternoon when the child’s grandmother noticed he appeared unusually tired after being picked up from Adamo’s home. Later, his mother observed that he seemed lethargic, couldn’t hold his head up, and “didn’t seem right.”
The mother became alarmed when the baby began vomiting a “clear, sticky, odd-smelling” substance and rushed him to a local emergency room. He was later transferred to another hospital, where he went into full cardiac arrest, according to the affidavit.
Adamo was released from jail on Oct. 15 after posting a $600,000 bond, per court records. It’s unclear whether she has retained an attorney to represent her.
