A couple is facing an unexpected situation after a friend decided to host a movie night — at their home — without even asking first.

Sharing the story on Mumsnet, the woman explained that she and her partner were the first in their friend group to get their own place. Since moving in, they’ve already hosted around eight gatherings for friends.

Recently, their friend — referred to as Nick for privacy — asked if they wanted to watch a movie together. Assuming it would take place at Nick’s parents’ house, where he and his girlfriend live, she responded enthusiastically, “That sounds nice! We can bring some snacks!”

But Nick quickly clarified: “I was thinking about asking if you two can have the movie night at your place.”

The message took her by surprise.

“I was a bit shocked since I thought he was telling us he was hosting a movie night at his place,” she wrote, adding that she didn’t believe Nick meant any harm but still found the assumption “a bit weird.”

She admitted that she and her partner lost interest in the idea once they realized they were expected to host again — especially since that meant cleaning up afterward.

Wondering if it was “kinda rude” of Nick to assume they’d provide the venue, she turned to Mumsnet users for advice.

One commenter suggested being direct: “Reply the truth: ‘We’re a bit tired of hosting so much recently, but if you have it at one of your homes we’d love to come.’”

Another user agreed, offering this alternative: “‘No sorry, that doesn’t work for me. We’ve got loads on at the moment — I thought you were inviting me to yours!’”
