Recovering from surgery is tough enough without adding transportation headaches to the mix.

One Reddit user, 28, shared that she’s been recovering from knee surgery and getting around on crutches — but her frustration has grown because her fiancé, 33, keeps using her car and returning it with an empty gas tank.

Since she’s not driving much, she didn’t mind him borrowing the car — until his carelessness started creating problems. “I’ve asked multiple times that he fill it up when he uses it, because this isn’t the first time he’s left it completely empty,” she wrote.

The latest incident happened after they discussed it clearly the night before. She reminded him she had physical therapy the next day and suggested, “I…suggested that he take my car in the morning, fill it up, and I’d take his. He agreed.”

But the next morning, he didn’t follow through. “When I reminded him, he laughed and said, ‘Yeah, the gas light’s on,’ like it was funny,” she shared.

Frustrated, she pointed out that she shouldn’t have to struggle at the pump while on crutches. “I told him that’s exactly why he should take care of it, because I’m not about to hobble around on crutches pumping gas,” she said. “He got really quiet, grabbed his keys, and stormed out to swap cars without saying much. He didn’t say he was mad, but it was obvious from how he acted.”

Now she’s conflicted. “I feel a little guilty, even though I know I wasn’t being unreasonable,” she admitted.

While some saw the disagreement as minor, others felt it revealed something deeper — a lack of respect and empathy. One commenter advised, “Stop letting him use your car. Putting in gas is basic respect, and he clearly has none.”

Another pointed out the concerning pattern: “What happens if you get really sick and he just laughs because he doesn’t wanna do it and then gets mad if you push back?”

“Sounds like a child, not a man,” another wrote. “You asked him to do a simple task and he made it into an argument. I’m sure this isn’t the first time he’s acted like this.”
