A beloved Virginia physical education teacher died last week after suffering a cardiac event while hiking along a popular trail in Maryland.
Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) confirmed the passing of Todd Funkhouser, 53, who taught at Sugarland Elementary School in Sterling, Virginia.
“Todd was a cherished member of the LCPS family, having taught in various schools for the last 30 years,” LCPS spokesperson Dan Adams said in a statement. “He was a beloved member of Sugarland Elementary School where he was the Physical Education teacher. We share in his family’s grief and are supporting them as they navigate this difficult time.”
According to the U.S. Park Police and a published obituary, Funkhouser, of Gerrardstown, West Virginia, suffered a cardiac event while hiking on the Billy Goat Trail on Monday, Oct. 13. He reportedly fell from a rocky section of the trail and was later pronounced dead by first responders, according to Loudoun Now, ABC affiliate WJLA, and Fox affiliate WTTG.
“Some good Samaritans saw his collapse and immediately called 911,” Funkhouser’s sister, Lauren, wrote in an Oct. 14 post on Facebook. “Paramedics did their best to save him, but the terrain prevented them from reaching him in time.”
Born in Michigan as an Air Force child, Funkhouser played football in high school before dedicating his career to teaching and coaching. He worked at Park View High School in Sterling prior to becoming a physical education teacher at Sugarland Elementary.
“To say he was a beloved and effective teacher — no matter where or what he was teaching — is an understatement,” his obituary read. “He treated every person he encountered with respect and a willingness to help and always said how lucky he felt to work with ‘his’ kids.”
“In addition to trail running, he loved hitting the gym early in the morning,” it continued. “He was joyful, thoughtful, and deeply beloved by all who got to know him through the various aspects of his life — and he was probably the funniest person most of us knew.”
Funkhouser also served in Iraq as a member of the Virginia Army National Guard. He is survived by his mother, sister, and extended family.
“My mom and I want to thank you all for the kind words we’ve already received,” Lauren wrote. She added that the Billy Goat Trail was one of her brother’s favorites. “Our hearts go out to everyone as we share the burden of losing Todd — who was just a good human being and funny as hell.”
According to the National Park Service, the Billy Goat Trail — located near the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center in Potomac, Maryland — is considered one of the most popular and challenging hiking trails in the D.C. area, with sections ranging from easy to strenuous.
