A 20-year-old man from New Canaan, Connecticut, has been taken into custody after allegedly calling 911 to report that he had killed his mother.
According to the New Canaan Police Arrest Log, Sebastian Van Stockum was arrested on Friday, Oct. 24, and charged with murder in connection with his mother’s death.
At approximately 10:36 p.m. that night, officers responded to reports of a male voice yelling from a wooded area. While police were en route, a man called 911 from a residence on Gerdes Road, stating that he had killed his mother.
When officers and emergency medical personnel arrived, they performed life-saving measures, but the woman—whose name has not been publicly released—was pronounced dead at the scene.
Van Stockum was immediately identified as a suspect and arrested. He is being held on a $2 million bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, Oct. 27. His booking photo shows visible scratches and blood on his face.
“As this incident is domestic in nature, no further information will be released,” the arrest log noted. It remains unclear whether Van Stockum has retained legal counsel.
New Canaan, an affluent Connecticut suburb, is home to several well-known figures, including Harry Connick Jr., David Letterman, and Paul Simon. The town previously drew national attention in 2019 following the disappearance of Jennifer Dulos, a mother of five whose husband, Fotis Dulos, was accused of her murder before dying by suicide. His associate, Michelle Troconis, was later convicted of conspiracy and sentenced to 14 years in prison. Jennifer Dulos was declared legally dead in October 2023.
