A mother is speaking out after her middle school-aged son was accused of using artificial intelligence (AI) to write his essay — despite her witnessing him complete the entire assignment himself.
The story was shared on Reddit, where the parent explained that her son had been tasked with writing a long-form essay using a tool called DBQ, which helps students build essays by using provided documents as source material. It was his first time using the database, and she watched as he carefully answered the prompts and cited his sources.
When the essay was submitted, however, the teacher gave him a zero — claiming the work had been written by AI or generated through Google.
“It’s frustrating because I know he did not,” the mom wrote. “He cited all the documents within DBQ that he used in his essay.”
She said she reached out to the teacher through direct message to discuss the issue but hadn’t received a response. Now, she’s unsure how to proceed.

Many commenters on Reddit encouraged her to escalate the situation if the teacher remains unresponsive. One person advised:
“If the teacher doesn’t respond within a reasonable time — usually a day or two — escalate to the administration and request a meeting with both the teacher and the principal. If that still doesn’t resolve things, take it to the school board.”
Others speculated that the misunderstanding might have been caused by grammar or editing software.
“Does your kid have Grammarly installed as an extension?” one user asked. “It can rewrite or clean up sentences, which technically counts as AI use. Some teachers ban it and will assign zeros if students use it.”
Another commenter urged the mother to approach the teacher with empathy rather than confrontation.
“Go in with a lot of generosity and compassion — teachers are struggling right now because so many students really are turning in AI-generated work,” they wrote. “You watched your child do this assignment, so focus on finding a fair solution together.”

The mom’s post struck a chord with many parents and educators who noted the growing tension between teachers trying to detect AI use and students being unfairly penalized for doing honest work.
