A 9-month-old baby has died following a dog attack in southeast Wales, authorities confirmed on Sunday evening.

According to a statement from Gwent Police, officers were called to an address in Crossway, Rogiet, around 6:00 p.m. local time after receiving reports of a dog attack. Paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service also attended the scene.

“Sadly, a 9-month-old baby was pronounced dead at the scene. The dog has been seized and removed from the property,” officials said in their statement.

Chief Superintendent John Davies noted that an investigation is underway. “We understand that there will be concerns around this incident, but officers are on scene and will be making further enquiries as the investigation progresses,” he said. “If you have concerns or information then please do stop and talk with us.”

Neighbors told the BBC that they were devastated by the tragedy and had seen several emergency vehicles in the area. Rogiet county councillor Peter Strong described the community’s grief in an interview with BBC Radio Wales Breakfast.

“It’s a deep and profound sense of shock that such a thing should happen in amidst our quiet community,” he said. “A baby is a deep source of joy and love, and to lose a baby in these circumstances is just awful.”

Strong urged residents to remain calm and to “give the family the space they need to grieve in peace,” adding that the community would “stand together” in support.
