A mom on TikTok is sparking conversation after revealing why she chose to bring her own food to a family birthday celebration.
In a video that has gained more than 279,000 views, Haley — known on TikTok as @granolablossom — shared that while her family was heading to a party, she decided to pack snacks that fit their lifestyle.
Calling herself a “crunchy mom,” Haley explained that her relatives were already familiar with her preferences, so she didn’t feel uncomfortable bringing outside food. She admitted, though, that she might hesitate to do the same at a friend’s event.
“Starting off strong with this red, cold-pressed juice … organic,” she said in the clip, showing what she’d packed. “These organic fruit snacks … this organic mango, fruit-strip bar.”
She also included sunflower seeds, applesauce pouches, and a GMO-free protein-style bar.
“See, I’m not too bad,” Haley said. “I’m not too crazy. There’s some stuff in here that’s not organic, but we do eat mostly organic, and I don’t let the kids have dyes or refined sugar. So this is everything we’re bringing to the birthday party.”
In text over the video, she asked: “Is this rude? Bringing our own food to a bday party because my kids can’t have GMOs?”
More than 1,400 commenters weighed in on the topic.
“I think bringing your own is much better than expecting the host to cater to your needs. Nothing rude to me at all!” one person wrote.
Another viewer joked, “Imagine going to a birthday party and your mom serves you sunflower seeds and dehydrated fruit strips while the other kids eat pizza and cake.”
A third commenter was surprised, saying, “I am shocked that everything you have is pre-packed and processed. I would have thought you’d cook their food.”
Haley replied, “Well, it’s a bday party … I got our version of junk.”
In a follow-up video, she shared that her family left the party without anyone noticing they’d brought their own food. Her kids enjoyed the snacks she’d packed and even had some Italian ice served for dessert.
“I’m also really happy they didn’t have cake — they got Italian ice,” she said. “That was the part I was nervous about.”
“I let her have it,” Haley added. “I’m sure there were flavors in it, but I’m not militant — just some stuff I really do care about. I want most of what my kids eat to be organic, or at least non-GMO, but like, oh well.”
Later, Haley explained in another TikTok that her approach comes from wanting to provide her children with healthier choices than she had growing up. She said much of what she ate as a child — and even into her early 20s — was canned and processed, which she believes contributed to her headaches, migraines, and indigestion.
“So that’s why I think it’s important to show my kids there are other options — like, we’re not eating garbage,” she said. “My older kids are teenagers, and yeah, they’ll eat chips and some other processed stuff that I wouldn’t buy, but they’re going out with friends and that’s different.”
“I’m just trying to do better than I was raised, and that’s really what it comes down to,” she added.
