Birthdays can bring out a mix of emotions — joy, reflection, and sometimes disappointment.

One woman on Reddit shared that she recently planned a small birthday celebration for herself — “nothing huge,” just a dinner at a nice mid-priced restaurant with her husband and two other couples.

She said she told her 34-year-old husband about the plan three weeks in advance, and he agreed to it — even helping choose the restaurant.

But on the day of her birthday, things took a turn.

Around 2 p.m., her husband’s sister called saying her moving plans had gone wrong and she needed help lifting boxes because the movers had left early. Without checking with his wife, he immediately agreed to help.

“Then he came to me and said, ‘Hey, I have to go help, we can move dinner to another day, right?’” she wrote. “I said no, I already booked, people are coming, I got ready. He said I was being selfish because family emergencies happen.”

Neither of them changed their minds — he went to help his sister, and she attended the dinner alone.

“I ended up going to the dinner with just our friends and had to explain why my own husband wasn’t there,” she explained. “I was smiling, but I felt so stupid.”

Later, she learned that her sister-in-law wasn’t in a desperate situation at all — she already had her boyfriend and two cousins helping her move.

“It was not like she was stranded on the street,” the woman wrote. “When he came home, he acted like I should understand because ‘that’s my sister.’ I told him he made me feel like I was second priority on my own birthday. He said I’m overreacting because it’s just a date and we can celebrate any day.”

The woman then turned to Reddit for perspective, asking if she was wrong to feel upset and unwilling to reschedule.

Commenters overwhelmingly sided with her, agreeing that this wasn’t a “family emergency” but rather a matter of misplaced priorities.

“Your husband was a jerk. He chose her without even a conversation with you. He showed you that he doesn’t care how you feel. Does he do that often?” one person asked.

Another commenter added, “This was deliberate to humble you. Both he and his sister knew what they were doing.”
