A middle-aged mother of three is considering having another child, but many people online believe she should focus on the children she already has.
The 41-year-old shared her thoughts on Mumsnet’s “Am I Being Unreasonable?” forum, explaining that she currently has “two teenagers and one toddler,” yet “can’t get the idea of having a fourth” child out of her mind.
“Partly to give my little one a sibling closer in age, but also I just don’t feel I’m ’done’ yet,” she wrote.
The original poster (OP) admitted that she worries she might be “pushing” her “luck” by trying for another child.
“My cut off would be having the baby before I turned 43, so if getting pregnant hadn’t happened by 42 and a couple of months I’d give up the idea,” she continued. She then asked the community, “Is it a stupid idea?”
The vast majority of commenters responded that they felt she should abandon the plan.

“YABU [you are being unreasonable]. Three is more than enough. Enjoy what you have,” one user wrote.
“Quit while you are ahead,” another person agreed.
Others pointed out that teenagers need substantial emotional and practical support, and adding another baby could pull attention away from the older children.
“The teen years can be really tough. For many parents it is the absolute toughest time. Even if yours have been easy so far that may change. I would focus my energy on getting them through those years,” one commenter advised.
Another user also highlighted the long-term reality of the age gap.
“My partner is 40 and has an elderly mother who is now in poor health. He has a stressful job and is pulling his hair out because his mom needs him so much more now,” the commenter shared, suggesting that a similar dynamic could appear decades later if the OP proceeds with another pregnancy.
