President Donald Trump has directed federal authorities to investigate after the House Oversight Committee released a cache of emails sent by Jeffrey Epstein on Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Trump — mentioned several times in the documents — issued a lengthy statement on Truth Social on Friday, Nov. 14. In it, he accused Democrats of using the email revelations as a distraction from the government’s reopening following a prolonged shutdown.

Positioning himself outside the controversy, Trump said he has instructed Attorney General Pam Bondi to have the Department of Justice examine Epstein’s connections with several prominent figures and institutions.

“Now that the Democrats are using the Epstein Hoax… to try and deflect from their disastrous SHUTDOWN… I will be asking A.G. Pam Bondi, and the Department of Justice… to investigate Jeffrey Epstein’s involvement and relationship with Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, Reid Hoffman, J.P. Morgan, Chase, and many other people and institutions,” he wrote.

Trump, 79, further claimed that “records show that these men, and many others, spent large portions of their life with Epstein, and on his ‘Island.’ Stay tuned!!!”

Within hours, Bondi announced on X that she had instructed U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton of the Southern District of New York to lead the investigation “with urgency and integrity.”

During the Clinton administration, Epstein — then a well-connected financier — made multiple visits to the White House. Clinton also took several trips on Epstein’s private jet. The former president has not been implicated in any crimes committed by Epstein.

In a March 6, 2011 email cited among the recently released materials, Epstein wrote that “Clinton was never on the island,” referencing Little Saint James, where he allegedly trafficked underage girls.

Clinton’s spokesperson has previously stated that it has been nearly two decades since he last had contact with Epstein, adding that Clinton “knows nothing about the terrible crimes” committed by the disgraced financier.

Earlier Friday, Trump posted a separate message on Truth Social, accusing Democrats of “doing everything in their withering power to push the Epstein Hoax again” to deflect from the shutdown fallout. He also criticized “Weak Republicans” who he said had “fallen into their clutches because they are soft and foolish.”

“Epstein was a Democrat, and he is the Democrat’s problem, not the Republican’s problem!” Trump wrote, before again naming individuals he said deserved investigation. “Ask Bill Clinton, Reid Hoffman, and Larry Summers about Epstein… I have a Country to run!”

Despite Trump’s efforts to redirect attention, his name appears repeatedly throughout the approximately 20,000 pages of emails and other documents disclosed by the Oversight Committee.

In one exchange, Epstein allegedly wrote to Ghislaine Maxwell:

“I want you to realize that that dog that hasn’t barked is trump… [Redacted victim’s name] spent hours at my house with him, he has never once been mentioned.”

In another alleged email to journalist Michael Wolff, Epstein claimed that Trump “knew about the girls.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt later stated that the “unnamed victim” referenced in the emails was Virginia Giuffre, who had worked at Mar-a-Lago and later accused Epstein of abuse before her death earlier this year.

Leavitt emphasized that Giuffre “repeatedly said President Trump was not involved in any wrongdoing whatsoever,” noting that Trump removed Epstein from Mar-a-Lago decades ago for inappropriate behavior toward female staff.

She called renewed attention to Epstein’s emails a “bad-faith effort” to distract from the federal government’s reopening and what she described as Trump’s “historic accomplishments.”
