A TikTok creator is speaking out about the heartbreaking choice to euthanize her longtime golden retriever after the aging dog bit her 3-year-old son.

The mother, who goes by @themrsgriff on the platform, posted a now-viral video explaining that her child required surgery and stitches for multiple facial puncture wounds after the incident. While she did not show the full extent of his injuries, she briefly shared a healing progress photo and expressed immense relief that the bite narrowly missed his eye.

She described the dog as a cherished companion of 12 years, but one who had recently become increasingly sensitive, arthritic, and reactive to movement and noise in their home. She explained that this was not an isolated occurrence. “It’s just not safe to have him around my kids anymore,” she said, adding that rehoming a senior dog with a bite history did not feel like a humane option.

According to her account, she had spent months trying to keep the children and the dog separated once she recognized his discomfort. However, one moment of unexpected contact resulted in a devastating outcome. The grief was clear in her voice as she spoke about saying goodbye to her best friend of over a decade. “My mama heart is shattered,” she said.

She shared her story in hopes of helping other parents recognize early warning signs and avoid similar situations. “If you have a dog that you’re even slightly questioning being around your kids, like, just don’t,” she warned.

In the video’s caption, she noted that her absence from TikTok recently was due to how overwhelming the last few weeks have been. Many commenters offered support and asked questions about what prompted the attack; she revealed that her son had simply walked past the dog when it happened.

While the emotional weight of the decision remains heavy, she expressed deep gratitude that her child is recovering quickly and without lasting damage. “We got so lucky,” she said.
