Minka Kelly Bristles at Jenna Bush Hager’s Awkward Question About Boyfriend Dan Reynolds: See the Uncomfortable Moment

Things got a little uncomfortable on the Today show when Jenna Bush Hager tried to steer a light conversation with Minka Kelly toward the actress’ love life.

Kelly stopped by Today with Jenna & Friends on Tuesday, Nov. 18, where Olivia Munn was co-hosting alongside Bush Hager, to promote her new Netflix holiday film, Champagne Problems. After chatting about the movie, Bush Hager attempted to pivot to Kelly’s relationship with Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds — and the vibe shifted.

“Speaking about the holidays and love and this romcom, you have a very big love in your life right now,” Bush Hager, 43, began, stumbling a bit over her words. “Talk about your relationship — if you feel comfortable.”

Kelly, 45, seemed caught off guard by the abrupt subject change, and Bush Hager pressed on, adding, “I think you posted this birthday message saying he healed wounds he didn’t inflict. That’s beautiful.”

“Yeah. It is beautiful,” the Ransom Canyon star replied. “I feel very lucky, he’s a really good guy.”

That was enough for Bush Hager to realize Kelly preferred to keep things more private. “Okay, sounds like you don’t want to talk about it, that’s fine,” she said, joking that they would skip a planned clip. “I was like, I guess we don’t straight then go to the video of him.”

Munn, 45, then jumped in with her own experience working with Reynolds, 38. “I’ll say this — I love Dan. I did his music video, it was the first thing I did after COVID,” she said, referring to the 2021 video for “Cutthroat.”

“I was actually pregnant, and no one had known yet,” Munn continued. “But, anyways, he was so kind, I love the whole band, and I’m really happy for you.”

Kelly agreed, calling Reynolds “the best,” and praising his bandmates as well. “They’re all the best. And I think there’s something sort of similar to the movie, in the theme of love sort of hits you when you least expect it,” she said.

The Friday Night Lights alum has been dating Reynolds since 2022. The pair were introduced by a mutual friend after Reynolds’ divorce, and they spent a month talking on the phone before they ever met in person. Reynolds later described the “really strange and awesome way” they got to know each other.

While he was working on Imagine Dragons’ sixth studio album, Loom, Reynolds would send Kelly songs he was writing. In return, she shared excerpts from her memoir, Tell Me Everything.

She was nervous for him to read the book before they’d even met, just as he was nervous for her to hear such personal music. But sharing that vulnerable work ended up bringing them closer, helping each understand the other on a deeper level very quickly.

Earlier this year, Reynolds stepped into Kelly’s world with a cameo in Ransom Canyon. Kelly explained that the idea came about after he visited the set and instantly charmed everyone behind the scenes.

“He came to visit [the set] and everyone, all the producers and writers, just naturally fell in love with him, like you do,” she said. “It’s easy to love Dan. He was such a good sport.”
