Former Theme Park Employee Recalls Moment Parents Handed Over Their Baby — and Then Disappeared Into the Venue

A former employee at a “very popular theme park in Florida” says one family casually handed over their baby girl during a rush—and then disappeared.

In a post on the entitled people subreddit, the original poster (OP) explained that kids have always seemed drawn to them. Children often wanted OP to hold them or play with them, and even at church, toddlers would seek them out just to nap on their lap.

“In my 20s, children made me kinda nervous because I didn’t know what to do with them and doubted I could care for one, which is wild considering I worked at magical rat planet,” OP wrote, noting that their interactions with kids at work were usually brief and polite.

One day, during an “extremely busy lunch period,” OP was trying to get to a cash register when they had to stop and wait for a large crowd to pass. That’s when they felt a little tug on their sleeve and looked down to see a “chubby, baby hand” holding onto their shirt.

The baby girl, OP said, was “adorable with big blue eyes and not a lick of hair on her round head.” OP chatted with her while the baby’s mother held her and smiled. Then the baby reached out toward OP, clearly wanting to be picked up.

Her mom was thrilled, saying this never happened and that her daughter usually wasn’t social and didn’t like other people. OP was used to kids reacting that way around them, so when the mother said it was okay to hold the baby and moved her closer, they hesitated.

OP wrote that they felt stuck: they didn’t know the child at all, but interacting with kids came with the job and they didn’t want to seem rude. “The baby’s little arms were still up, so I said ‘just for a second’ and picked her up,” they recalled. The baby was “very chunky and cute” and immediately relaxed, happily perched on OP’s hip.

When OP finally looked up, they realized the baby’s entire family—her mom, dad, and grandmother—had vanished into the crowd.

“I didn’t even know their names, the baby’s name or any identifying information other than their physical appearances,” OP wrote. They spent about 30 minutes walking around the park, holding the cheerful baby and searching for her family.

Eventually, one of OP’s managers came out, and they explained what had happened. When OP tried to hand the baby over, the manager refused to take her. “That’s all you! You have to find her parents,” he said, according to OP. So OP kept walking, baby still on their hip, for another 10 minutes.

Finally, they spotted the baby’s grandmother in the crowd. “She spots me as well and tries to turn around and leave!” OP wrote. They quickly caught up and handed the child back, noticing that the grandmother looked “semi-disappointed,” as if she hadn’t expected to be found so quickly.

“People, you can’t just drop your baby off to a complete stranger! They didn’t even leave supplies lol. Just handed me their infant and dipped Father God,” OP wrote. “Needless to say, I didn’t hold anymore children, not even for a second.”

In an edit to the post, OP explained they didn’t call security because situations like this are, unfortunately, surprisingly common at that particular theme park.

“Police would have to basically live there if they were called every time parents or guardians ditched their children at magical rat planet,” they wrote. “My incident is literally one of many. That’s the unfortunate truth.”

Commenters on the subreddit were quick to weigh in, many saying they would have handled things very differently. One user said they’d go straight to the intercom and make a public announcement warning the parents that the police and child protective services would be contacted if they didn’t come back for their daughter.

“Honestly I would ask to go on the intercom and say ‘to the people who just handed me their big blue eyed one year old (you didn’t specify her age, so it’s a guess LOL), I’ll be calling the police for abandonment and hopefully they’ll take the kid to the child into protective services, if you want your kid back I’ll be near [this location], otherwise have fun explaining to officers and CPS about child abandonment’ 😤” the commenter wrote.

Others expressed outrage at the parents’ behavior, calling it dangerous and irresponsible.

“People like that make me sick. If you can’t handle children, don’t try for them,” one user commented. “Geez I honestly hope that any other children that those people had were taken and given to better folks.”
