Two University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) football players were injured this weekend after authorities say they were stabbed by a teammate during an incident on campus.

The alleged stabbing happened around 10 a.m. local time on Saturday, Nov. 22, at the school’s Football Operations Center, according to the Associated Press, NBC News and WVTM 13 News. Officials reported that two players were taken to a hospital in stable condition, while a third player was detained at the scene.

UAB player Daniel Mincey has been charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder and was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on Nov. 22, according to county records. The names of the injured players have not been released publicly.

In a statement to the New York Post, a UAB spokesperson said there is no ongoing threat to the campus. The spokesperson added that the team chose to proceed with its scheduled game, emphasizing that the university’s top priority is the safety and well-being of its students.

A separate statement to NBC News confirmed that the two injured players remain in stable condition. The spokesperson said the university is keeping their families in its thoughts as they recover.

After UAB played its game against the University of South Florida despite the incident, head coach Alex Mortensen addressed the decision at a press conference. He said the team discussed the situation and the players strongly wanted to take the field.

“The conversation went back to the seniors,” Mortensen said, noting that it was senior day and the team wanted to play for them. He also stressed that the program is focused on supporting everyone affected by the incident and ensuring players know counseling and other resources are available through the university.
