A bridegroom is accusing his older sister of “sabotaging” his wedding after she blocked a $1,200 deposit for his dream venue — a charge he put on her credit card without asking.

In a post on Reddit’s “Am I the Jerk” forum, the 28-year-old woman explained that her 25-year-old brother had used her card details to secure the booking, then became angry when she froze the card and disputed the payment.

“I told them flat out: if you use my card without permission, that’s theft,” she wrote.

She said that earlier in 2024, she had once allowed her brother to use her card when “his debit card was being weird,” and he paid her back immediately. It now appears he saved her card information and used it again in October 2025 to cover the venue’s deposit, even though he and his fiancée didn’t yet have the money.

When she noticed the large charge, she initially assumed it was fraud. Only when she checked the receipt did she realize her brother’s name was on it, prompting her to call him.

He told her he used the card because the venue “required a card right away” and he “didn’t want to miss the date.” At first, she was sympathetic and agreed to wait, after he promised to reimburse her “once his next paycheck clears.”

Three weeks later, she still hadn’t seen a cent.

Frustrated, she froze the card and worked with her bank to cancel the transaction. The venue then contacted her brother to inform him that the payment had bounced.

“Now he’s furious, saying I ‘sabotaged’ his wedding and made him look bad in front of his fiancée,” she wrote.

Her parents, she said, are taking his side.

“My parents are pressuring me to just ‘let it slide’ because ‘he’s stressed and didn’t mean harm,’ ” she continued, adding that her family has called her “dramatic” and “vindictive over family.”

Commenters on Reddit strongly disagreed with her family’s stance and largely supported the sister.

“NTJ (Not The Jerk)! Any family who disagrees can let him use their credit card,” one top response read.

Many pointed out that saving her card details for a year and then using them without consent amounted to “premeditated theft,” and urged her to review past statements to make sure there were no other unauthorized charges.

“Don’t think he realizes what a gift OP (original poster) has given them by getting the transaction canceled,” one commenter wrote. “OP could have filed a police report and let the courts deal with him. He should consider himself lucky that he just has to scrounge around for a deposit and not a lawyer for the fraud and identity theft that he committed.”
