Soon-to-Be Bride Sparks Debate After Refusing to Turn Home Office into Guest Room

A bride-to-be recently shared her frustrations on Reddit after a disagreement with her future in-laws over how she and her fiancé are using the second bedroom in their new apartment.

The couple had just moved into a two-bedroom place, and the extra room quickly became her dedicated workspace. She explained that she works from home “4–5 days a week” and uses the room for nearly everything in her daily routine — it’s where she keeps her clothes, makeup and filming equipment. “I’m in this room for hours every day,” she wrote, stressing how important the layout and function of the space are to her.

Overnight visitors, on the other hand, are rare. She estimated they host guests “maybe 20 nights a year at most.” For those occasions, the couple already owns what she described as a “high-quality queen air mattress,” which has always been sufficient when friends or family stay over.

Her future in-laws, however, were not satisfied with that setup. According to her post, they have repeatedly pushed for a more permanent arrangement. She said they offered “three separate times” to give the couple a spare mattress and even buy a bed frame so the room could be turned into a traditional guest bedroom.

Each time, her fiancé tried to gently shut down the idea. He told his parents that he and his fiancée hadn’t made a final decision about the room yet and reminded them they were welcome to bring their own mattress when visiting. He even suggested they could “take it back home afterward” once their stay was over. Despite that, his parents continued to revisit the topic.

The tension came to a head when the subject was raised again while they were on speakerphone. The bride-to-be admitted she became “visibly frustrated,” which led her fiancé to tell her not to be “snippy” and to assure her that he would handle it.

She didn’t feel that was enough. She told him the conversation “needs to stop being brought up,” explaining that she now felt his parents were crossing a line. From her perspective, their insistence on turning her office into a full-time guest room was inconsiderate and ignored how much she relied on the space every day.

Trying to find a compromise, she proposed a more flexible solution: a daybed. “I’ve suggested getting a daybed instead,” she wrote, noting that it could function as a couch for her during the workweek and still provide a comfortable sleeping option when guests visit.

She emphasized that this wouldn’t even eliminate their original plan — they still had the “really good air mattress” as a backup. She even considered adding a “nice topper” to the air mattress to make it feel more luxurious for overnight guests who might use it.

For her, the issue came down to practicality and boundaries. Since she spends so much of her time in that room, dedicating it primarily to people who only visit a handful of nights each year didn’t seem reasonable.

Reddit users largely took her side. One commenter wrote that she was “NTA” (not the a–hole) and suggested she simply recommend “a very nice hotel” to her future in-laws so they could choose whatever kind of bed they prefer. Many others agreed that her desire to keep the room as a home office was completely valid.

Another commenter also felt she wasn’t at fault, but offered a small critique. They liked the daybed idea as a solid compromise, but thought it was a bit much that she and her fiancé had told his parents they could haul a mattress to the apartment and then back home again after each visit.
