Impeachment Articles Promised Before Christmas

Rep. Al Green (D-TX) says he plans to introduce privileged articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump before Congress adjourns for the Christmas break — a move that would require the House to take them up within two legislative days, even though they could still be tabled.

“There will be articles of impeachment filed before the Christmas break. This, I pledge,” Green said. “We have to participate. This is a participatory democracy. The impeachment requires the hands and the guidance of all of us.”

Describing his stance, Green added, “I am Al Green, an unbought, unbossed, unafraid, liberated Democrat. I will speak truth to power, which is pretty easy to do. You simply say, ‘Power, we have a problem. Let’s solve it.’ I will do that, but I’ll also speak truth about power and say, ‘Power, we have a problem, and you’re it.’”

He cast the upcoming impeachment effort as a test of Democrats’ willingness to oppose the Trump administration and said he plans to hold a peaceful protest at the Lincoln Memorial.

Green, who has previously introduced impeachment measures, did not coordinate this move with Democratic leadership and has not yet provided specifics about the charges he intends to pursue.

With Republicans controlling the House, analysts say the bid is highly unlikely to remove Trump from office, but it could nonetheless contribute to further political and reputational pressure on the president.
