Luigi Mangione entered a New York City courtroom in shackles on Monday, Dec. 1, for a pre-trial hearing in his state murder case — nearly a year after he was accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in midtown Manhattan.

Mangione, who has been charged with murder in both state and federal court, is appearing at a hearing where the judge will decide whether his diary entries can be admitted as evidence in the New York case.

Once inside the courtroom, Mangione’s shackles were removed. He wore a gray jacket over a red-and-white plaid shirt, open at the collar with the top two buttons undone.

Prosecutors in New York initially charged Mangione with first-degree murder in furtherance of an act of terrorism and second-degree murder as a crime of terrorism. Those terrorism-related state charges were later dropped after a judge ruled there was insufficient evidence to show he had carried out an act of terrorism.

Mangione still faces nine felony counts at the state level, including second-degree murder. He is also charged with terrorism in federal court and could face the death penalty if convicted there.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Thompson’s killing drew national attention after the healthcare executive was shot multiple times on a Manhattan street by a masked gunman as he walked toward an annual investor event.

A multi-day manhunt for the suspect ended with Mangione’s arrest at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa.

Since his extradition to New York following his December 2024 arrest, Mangione has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center.
