A California man and his wife are facing serious charges in the death of his 14-month-old daughter, who authorities say was subjected to ongoing abuse.

Alfredo Muñoz Jr., 40, and Kelly Anelalani Muñoz, 34, have each been charged with one count of murder, one count of torture and one count of assault on a child causing death, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday, Dec. 2.

During a court hearing in Long Beach on Monday, Dec. 1, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Brian Rosenberg alleged that the couple “broke multiple bones over numerous incidents,” beginning on July 1, 2025, according to the Long Beach Post.

On Nov. 7, the Long Beach Police Department was called to Miller Children’s Hospital regarding “a possible child abuse incident,” according to a police press release.

The child, identified as Tilly S., was found “unresponsive and with signs of trauma,” the release stated. She was placed on life support but died three days later as a result of her injuries.

Detectives launched an investigation and concluded that there had been “on-going abuse to the child and the victim’s death was a result of abuse from her father and stepmother,” per the release.

The couple was arrested on Nov. 25 and booked into the Long Beach City Jail, each on $3 million bail.

“The tragic death of this little girl is a heartbreaking reminder of the sacred responsibility we all share to protect our children from harm,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a statement. “Our Office is committed to seeking justice for Tilly and ensuring those responsible are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

According to court records and a law enforcement source cited by the Los Angeles Times, Alfredo Muñoz previously pleaded no contest to one count of willful cruelty to a child causing possible injury or death. He was sentenced to four years in prison in 2021, the outlet reported.

An arraignment hearing for the couple is scheduled for Dec. 16.
