A Florida man is facing criminal charges after authorities say he stole a BMW, crashed it within minutes and then told police he had been “teleported” into the vehicle.
Calvin Curtis Johnson, 36, was arrested on Monday, Dec. 8, following the alleged theft of a BMW from Bicentennial Park near Ormond Beach, Florida, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said the car’s owner had left the convertible unlocked, with the keys inside a closed cupholder, while stepping away to walk his dog. During that time, the vehicle was reportedly taken.
Police allege Johnson drove off with the BMW and crashed it on a nearby highway only minutes later.
Body camera footage released by the sheriff’s office shows Johnson injured and visibly panicked as officers approach him. In the video, he repeatedly denies stealing the car.
“I don’t know, I teleported or something,” Johnson says as an officer nears the wrecked vehicle.
Throughout the footage, Johnson is heard speaking incoherently. When an officer states that the car was stolen, Johnson responds, “I don’t know how I got here.”
At another point, he tells officers, “You saved me from the aliens.”
After receiving medical treatment at a local hospital, Johnson was transferred to the Volusia County Branch Jail. He is charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle and driving with a suspended license, authorities said.
Johnson is scheduled to be arraigned over the weekend.
