A 31-year-old new father turned to Reddit for advice after a bitter dispute with his wife over their daughter’s name spiraled into separation—and talk of divorce.
In his post, the man said he and his 32-year-old wife built their relationship around a shared love of fandoms. They met at an anime convention while in university, and he described their “nerdy” interests as something that always felt like a core part of their bond.
Married for six years, the couple started trying for a baby after buying a home. He wrote that the process was emotionally draining, and that they had talked extensively about what they would name their child, even creating two lists while they were trying to conceive.
He said his wife pushed hard for a fandom-inspired name, an idea he initially supported—with one condition. He told her he was open to something cute as long as the reference stayed subtle.
But once they learned they were having a girl, he claimed his wife became intensely focused on one specific option: “Vriska,” a name from the webcomic Homestuck. He wrote that he repeatedly refused, but she wouldn’t consider alternatives and argued that fandoms mattered because they were tied to their relationship.

Eventually, he believed they reached an agreement after a serious conversation. According to him, they decided she could choose the name—but only from the list they had already made together, which included more understated references.
Then came the baby shower.
He said things felt normal until gifts from his wife’s immediate family were opened. That’s when he noticed multiple items—onesies and nursery decor—already customized with the name Vriska. He wrote that he stayed quiet during the celebration, but confronted his wife afterward at home.
He described the conversation as explosive. He said she cried, yelled, and accused him of being embarrassed by their shared hobbies. He also claimed the argument turned physical, writing that she grabbed his arm and dug her nails into it—behavior he said was completely out of character for her.

From there, he said the situation deteriorated quickly. After contacting her family, his wife left the house and cut off communication. He wrote that she even blocked him from the hospital when she later went into labor early, and that he missed the birth of his daughter.
When she eventually tried to return home, he said he set firm conditions: therapy, and clarity about whether their baby had been officially named Vriska. When he learned the name had been legally recorded, he wrote that he told her to leave.
He said he then issued an ultimatum: if she wouldn’t agree to change their daughter’s name to one they had genuinely agreed on, he would file for divorce and seek custody.
Now facing backlash from both families, he asked Reddit whether he was being unreasonable—saying he never expected something as personal as naming their child to turn into a full-scale rupture, especially over what he described as a character name he had clearly rejected.
