Pamela Hemphill, widely known as the “MAGA granny,” was one of the many individuals convicted for her role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. But earlier this year, she made headlines for a rare move: publicly rejecting former President Donald Trump’s offer of a pardon for those charged in connection with the insurrection.

Hemphill stood apart by formally refusing the gesture, saying she wouldn’t accept a pardon that, in her view, would disrespect Capitol police, the justice system, and the country itself.

“Accepting a pardon would only insult the Capitol police officers, rule of law, and, of course, our nation,” she told the BBC in January. “I pleaded guilty because I was guilty, and accepting a pardon would only add to the gaslighting and false narratives.”

Now, former Vice President Mike Pence—who was himself targeted by rioters during the attack—has personally commended Hemphill for her decision.

In a letter dated June 2, 2025, Pence wrote to Hemphill:

“I am writing to express my admiration for your decision to refuse a presidential pardon and accept responsibility for your actions on January 6th.”

Pence went on to reflect on his own stance during that day:

“January 6th was a tragic day, but I will always believe that I did my duty that day to see to the peaceful transfer of power under the Constitution of the United States.”

He concluded with praise for Hemphill’s integrity:

“Your honorable decision speaks volumes about your commitment to the Rule of Law. I am certain that your willingness to accept responsibility has inspired many Americans by your example of integrity and faith. May God bless you and your family with every blessing in the years ahead.”

Hemphill shared the letter on social media, writing, “It’s been a long and hard journey. But this letter I received today has made every heartache, smear campaign and sleepless night more than worth it!”

Her decision drew praise online from supporters and critics of Trump alike. Many commended her accountability and growth, while others applauded Pence’s letter for recognizing someone willing to own their mistakes.

One user wrote, “I probably disagree with most everything Pence believes, but on this, I wholeheartedly agree. I share his admiration for your principled stance.” Another added, “My respect for VP Pence continues to grow—and Pam is to be commended too!”

Together, Hemphill and Pence’s exchange has struck a chord with Americans still grappling with the legacy of January 6, offering a rare moment of reflection and bipartisan acknowledgment of accountability.
