Donald Trump went off on a long aside about wife Melania Trump’s underwear during a recent campaign-style rally.
Appearing in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, on Friday, Dec. 19, the 79-year-old president addressed inflation and efforts to lower prescription drug prices ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. But while revisiting the FBI search of his Palm Beach, Florida, resort Mar-a-Lago in 2022, he shifted to describing what agents allegedly encountered in Melania’s closet.
“They went into my wife’s closet … they looked at her drawers,” Donald said of Melania, 55, whom he married in 2005.
Calling her “a very meticulous person,” he continued: “Her undergarments, sometimes referred to as panties, are folded perfect, wrapped. They’re, like, so perfect.”
“I think that she steams them,” he added.

The FBI executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago in August 2022 as part of a criminal investigation that followed revelations by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). In February of that year, NARA disclosed that officials had retrieved 15 boxes of documents from the property that should have been transferred at the end of Trump’s presidency.
Days after the search, the warrant and a property receipt were released publicly. The documents showed investigators were seeking materials that could indicate records had been removed or destroyed, justice obstructed, or the Espionage Act violated. The items recovered included 11 sets of classified documents, some marked “top secret,” which are typically intended to be viewed only in secure government facilities.

Trump was later indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2023 over allegations that he mishandled classified documents after leaving the White House, becoming the first U.S. president to face federal criminal charges. He was arrested and arraigned in the U.S. District Court of South Florida and pleaded not guilty. A superseding indictment later added counts, but the case was dismissed in July 2024.
Over the past decade, Trump has faced a string of legal controversies, including state and federal lawsuits and investigations. These have included scrutiny tied to an alleged hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 campaign, cases related to his actions leading up to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, and legal proceedings involving him and 18 allies connected to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
