Detention Officer Dies in Off-Duty Motorcycle Crash: ‘His Legacy of Happiness and Care Will Continue to Inspire’

A Dallas County Sheriff’s Office detention service officer has died following an off-duty motorcycle accident, the Dallas Police Department said in a post on X.

Detention Service Officer Dakendrick Traylor was 35. He was involved in the fatal crash on Dec. 14, CBS News reported. Dallas police announced his death on Saturday, Dec. 20. Additional details about the accident have not been released publicly.

According to Dallas police, Traylor was assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Special Hospital Observation Team and also served on the agency’s Honor Guard. He had worked with the department for five years, his obituary states.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this difficult time,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post. “DSO Traylor will be missed by his sheriff’s office family.”

His obituary described his service as a reflection of his commitment and character, noting that he carried out his duties with integrity and compassion. It also remembered him as “a deeply cherished individual” known for his loving, caring, and upbeat demeanor, as well as his strong dedication to family. “His legacy of happiness and care will continue to inspire those he touched throughout his life,” the obituary reads.

Motorcycle crashes remain a serious safety concern across Texas and the country. The Texas Department of Transportation says one person dies each day in a motorcycle crash, and notes that in 2024, 581 riders were killed and 2,534 were seriously injured in crashes, according to its website. Nationwide, there were 6,335 motorcyclist deaths in 2023, and motorcyclists accounted for 15% of traffic fatalities despite representing about 3% of registered vehicles, according to AutoInsurance.
