A New Jersey man was fatally struck by an arrow while walking on a sidewalk in what prosecutors described as an apparently random attack.

Pablo Criollo, 45, was walking in Kearny when he was hit around 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Surveillance video obtained by NBC News captured the moment of the attack, including the sound of a bow snapping just before Criollo reacts in pain.

“Every morning, my daughter is asking me about her father, what time he will come home,” Criollo’s wife, Paula Amez, told the outlet in Spanish during a vigil. She said he was on his way home for dinner when he was killed.

Authorities said their investigation led them to identify 44-year-old Oscar Feijoo as a person of interest. When investigators attempted to speak with him at his Kearny home, prosecutors said the encounter escalated into an hours-long SWAT standoff. During that standoff, Feijoo allegedly barricaded himself inside the residence and set multiple fires.

Those fires were extinguished, and Feijoo later surrendered after leaving the home “armed with knives,” prosecutors said. He was taken into custody shortly before 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21.

Feijoo has been charged with murder, aggravated arson, and weapons offenses, prosecutors said, adding that additional charges are expected. It was not immediately clear whether he has entered a plea or retained an attorney.

In a GoFundMe fundraiser created to help cover funeral costs and other expenses, Criollo’s stepdaughter, Azul, wrote that the family is “completely shattered by this act of violence.”

“Pablo came from Ecuador at the age of 16 to start a new life,” the fundraiser states. “I knew him for 10 years and through that he was my mother’s partner and provided for me like I was his own daughter.”

She added that the family lost their “main source of income and and don’t know how to make it through these upcoming days or months.”

As of Wednesday, Dec. 24, the GoFundMe had raised more than $37,000, nearly doubling its $20,000 goal.
