A bride’s choice to leave her older sister out of the bridal party due to concerns about weight has taken an emotional toll on the family.
In a post shared on the parenting forum Mumsnet, the sister questioned whether she was being “unreasonable” for feeling hurt after learning she would not be asked to be a bridesmaid. According to the post, the bride said she was worried her sister might not lose the weight she gained during pregnancy in time for the wedding.
“She said that she is worried that I won’t have lost my baby weight by the date of her wedding,” wrote the woman, who is currently 13 weeks pregnant and will be around 10 months postpartum when the ceremony takes place.
The bride also argued that her sister would be too focused on caring for her three children on the day of the wedding to properly fulfill bridesmaid responsibilities, which she described as requiring constant attention on the bride. While the expectant mother acknowledged that her children would naturally be her priority, she admitted the exclusion still felt deeply personal.

“I feel so bad about this,” she wrote.
The situation was made more painful by the timing. The conversation took place on Christmas Day, and the sister said it hurt to learn that five friends had been chosen as bridesmaids while she was left out.
She added that she had long imagined being part of her sister’s wedding party, especially since the bride had served as one of her own bridesmaids. “I would have loved to be hers,” she explained.
Many Mumsnet users responded sympathetically, calling the bride’s reasoning “unreasonable” and, in some cases, “mean.” Several commenters suggested that the exclusion might ultimately be a blessing, arguing that it spared the woman from having to cater to someone they described as overly self-centered and shallow.
“Sounds like there’s a bridezilla on the way. Just be grateful it won’t include you,” one person wrote, while another added, “Dodged a bullet there, I reckon.”
