Denny Hamlin is grieving the loss of his father following a devastating house fire in North Carolina.
On Wednesday, Dec. 31, the NASCAR driver shared an emotional message on X honoring his late father, Dennis Hamlin, who died from injuries sustained in a fire at the family’s home on Sunday, Dec. 28. Hamlin’s mother, Mary Lou Hamlin, was also injured in the blaze and remains hospitalized.
“Thank you to everyone who has reached out with condolences on my father’s passing,” Hamlin, 45, wrote. “My mother continues to improve, and our family truly appreciates the outpouring of support and the respect for our privacy during this time.”

Officials confirmed that Dennis Hamlin died from his injuries after being transported to a hospital. Mary Lou was also able to escape the home and is currently receiving treatment in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Details about the extent of her injuries have not been disclosed.
Authorities said the fire broke out shortly after 6:19 p.m. local time at the residence, which was later confirmed to belong to Hamlin’s parents. When first responders arrived, nearly half of the house was already engulfed in flames. The home was ultimately declared a total loss.
Due to the property’s large size, remote location, and lack of nearby fire hydrants, between 10 and 15 fire departments responded to the scene. Firefighters worked for more than two hours to bring the blaze under control amid a local water shortage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Earlier this year, Hamlin spoke openly about his father’s health struggles and the sacrifices his parents made to support his racing career. He described his father as his biggest supporter, someone who constantly encouraged him regardless of wins or losses.
“He always tells me I’m the best,” Hamlin said at the time. He also fondly recalled spending countless hours together in his father’s garage, surrounded by memorabilia from his career. “It’s just good to reminisce,” he said, adding that he cherished the time they spent together each week.
