A frantic search for a missing four-year-old in rural Alabama has ended in heartbreak after authorities found the child’s body with his devoted dog still beside him.

Jonathan Everett Boley, known to family as John John, vanished Wednesday morning from his father’s home, prompting an urgent, days-long search across wooded and difficult terrain. On Friday, Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith confirmed that the boy’s body had been located about two miles from his home.

Smith said John John’s dog, Buck, who was believed to have been with the child when he disappeared, was still with him when he was found.

Speaking at a press conference, the visibly emotional sheriff remembered the boy as an “adventurous” child who loved spending time outdoors.

Family members described John John as a lively, nature-loving child who enjoyed Paw Patrol and running around. He was last seen on New Year’s Eve around 11:30 a.m., wearing a Mickey Mouse shirt, black pants, and Paw Patrol shoes. His father reported him missing just a few hours later.

Authorities said the child was last spotted near a state highway close to a church in Jasper, Alabama, roughly 40 miles northwest of Birmingham. Search teams, assisted by volunteers, spent days scouring thick woods and rugged ground in hopes of finding him alive.

“This is going to be a very hard time for our community,” Smith said. “It’s also a very hard time for the volunteer teams who did an outstanding job trying to find Jonathan. This is not the outcome we wanted. We were all hoping for something different.”

Father Arrested During Investigation

As the investigation unfolded, the child’s father, Jameson Kyle Boley, was arrested after suspected explosive devices were discovered at his home, according to the sheriff. Officials later determined the devices were not explosive.

Neighbors had reported hearing what sounded like explosions in the area for weeks prior, including one report of a loud noise around 4 a.m. on the morning John John was reported missing. Authorities emphasized there is no known connection between those reports and the child’s disappearance.

Boley was arrested on charges related to explosives and child endangerment. Authorities said he faces one count of unlawful manufacture of a destructive device or bacteriological weapon and two counts of chemical endangerment of a child related to methamphetamines. Sheriff Smith stressed that these charges are not related to the boy’s death.

John John’s parents are separated, and his mother moved to Florida last year. Under a custody agreement, the father reportedly had limited visitation each year. The mother traveled to Alabama on Wednesday evening and has been cooperating fully with investigators. The sheriff also confirmed that the father was interviewed by the FBI.

Officials have not released details about how the child died, and the investigation remains ongoing.
