Man Allows Sister to Move in with His Family If She Follows 1 House Rule, but She Doesn’t Listen

Setting boundaries with family can be difficult, especially when relatives are living under the same roof. One father recently described this struggle in a Reddit post, explaining how a clear house rule led to an unexpected family rift.

The father shared that he had allowed his sister to stay with his family temporarily, but only after laying down one firm condition: she was free to smoke, as long as it wasn’t inside the house or anywhere near his children. According to him, she initially agreed.

That agreement didn’t last. He wrote that he repeatedly caught his sister smoking indoors or close to his kids. Each time he reminded her of the rule, she brushed off his concerns and accused him of overreacting. After several warnings, he told her that continuing to break the rule would mean she could no longer stay with them.

When it happened again, he followed through and asked her to leave.

The situation quickly escalated beyond the household. His sister told other family members that she had been kicked out “over nothing.” While his wife supported the no-smoking rule, she felt he should have handled it differently or offered one more chance, given that his sister had nowhere else to go. His mother was even more critical, accusing him of embarrassing the family and abandoning his sister when she needed help.

Caught in the middle, the father admitted he felt torn. He stood by his belief that protecting his children’s health had to come first, but the criticism from both his wife and mother made him question whether he had made the right call.

Many commenters, however, backed his decision. Several shared similar experiences of asking relatives to leave after house rules were ignored. One commenter emphasized the importance of setting firm boundaries, while another pointed out that it wasn’t the sister’s home and she needed to respect the rules.

Others were even more direct, noting that even without children involved, homeowners have the right to decide what is and isn’t allowed in their own space. As one response put it, the father had clearly stated the rules, issued warnings, and enforced boundaries—and that was entirely reasonable.
