A pilot was killed Sunday afternoon when a private plane crashed and caught fire at Provincetown Municipal Airport in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
The crash occurred around 3:15 p.m. local time as the aircraft was attempting to land, according to Massachusetts State Police. Officials said the pilot was the only person on board the plane. The pilot’s identity has not been released publicly.
The Town of Provincetown confirmed that the aircraft ignited upon impact. Fire crews from the Provincetown Fire Department, along with mutual aid partners, responded quickly and extinguished the flames. Despite their efforts, the pilot was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, Provincetown Municipal Airport was closed to all operations. Assistant Town Manager Dan Riviello said the airport remained closed through Monday, Jan. 5, as authorities continued their response and investigation.
The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, with the Federal Aviation Administration and Massachusetts State Police also notified. Officials have not yet released additional details about what led to the accident, and state police said no further information was available at this time.
The investigation remains ongoing.
