Spencer Pratt is expanding on his political background as he campaigns for mayor of Los Angeles.

On Wednesday, Jan. 7, the Hills alum, 42, announced he is running for L.A. mayor. The next day, Pratt said he is a registered Republican and has no plans to change his party affiliation.

“I’ve been in the public eye most of my life and there isn’t any dirt you can find on me that hasn’t already been aired,” he wrote in a Thursday, Jan. 8, X post. “Seems like the only thing people don’t know is my voter registration, so here go: I registered Republican in 2020 and never changed it.”

Pratt added that he won’t “change it now just to check a different box.”

He also emphasized the nonpartisan nature of the race.

“This is a non-partisan race – there will be no D or R next to my name,” he wrote. “As Mayor, I will not serve either party. I will work with anyone who wants to help the City. No labels necessary.”

Pratt kicked off his campaign on the first anniversary of the Los Angeles fires, which destroyed his and his wife Heidi Montag’s home.

“The system in Los Angeles isn’t struggling, it’s fundamentally broken,” he said during his announcement at the “They Let Us Burn!” protest. “It is a machine designed to protect the people at the top and the friends they exchange favors with while the rest of us drown in toxic smoke and ash.”

“Business as usual is a death sentence for Los Angeles, and I’m done waiting for someone to take real action,” he continued. “And let me be clear, this just isn’t a campaign. This is a mission, and we’re gonna expose the system.”

Later that day, Pratt confirmed his mayoral bid with an Instagram post showing him filling out campaign paperwork. “Yes, it’s official. Papers are filed and campaign is open: mayorpratt.com,” he wrote.

This is not Pratt’s first time stepping into political issues. In September 2025, he visited Capitol Hill and joined Republican lawmakers to draw attention to a congressional investigation into the response to the Palisades fire.

“I feel like this is going to be so powerful for all of the United States because there shouldn’t be disasters that are preventable,” he said at the time.
