A babysitter accused of driving while heavily intoxicated with a baby in the backseat has been arrested.

The Page Police Department (PPD) in Arizona said in a Facebook release that officers arrested an unidentified driver around 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 12 after the person was allegedly seen speeding and driving erratically.

According to the department, an officer observed a vehicle traveling about 60 mph in a posted 40 mph zone and saw the driver “weaving in its lane of traffic,” the release stated.

After stopping the vehicle, the officer reported that the driver showed “signs and symptoms of extreme alcohol intoxication,” according to PPD. During a check of the car, the officer also found a 1-year-old child in the backseat.

Police said the driver later took a breathalyzer test and allegedly recorded a .293 — which the department described as “well over 3 times the legal limit,” per the release.

Investigators said the driver “was supposed to be babysitting while the child’s mother was at work.”

The driver was arrested, and police said the person’s license was suspended following the incident.

PPD said the driver was initially charged with aggravated DUI, aggravated DUI with a child under 15 years old in the vehicle, child endangerment, and criminal speed, noting that additional charges could still be filed.

The toddler was returned to the child’s mother, and the case has been referred to the Department of Child Services.
