A 70-year-old woman died after becoming unresponsive following a ride on Revenge of the Mummy at Universal Studios in Orlando, according to a newly updated state report.
The incident occurred on Nov. 25, according to a report from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services that was updated on Thursday, Jan. 15. The woman was transported to a hospital and later died. Officials have not publicly released her name.
A Universal spokesperson said the company does not comment on pending claims.
The report did not include additional details. It contains brief summaries of medical incidents reported each quarter at major Florida theme parks, including Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, and Legoland.
“Due to privacy-related concerns, the Department does not receive updates to initial assessments of a patron’s condition,” the department wrote.
Since 2004, there have been 21 incidents reported in connection with the Revenge of the Mummy ride, ranging from dizziness to a reported vertebrae fracture, according to NBC affiliate WFLA.
The Tampa Bay Times reported that the ride reaches speeds of 40 mph and includes a 39-foot drop.
Separately, in December, five lawsuits were filed in Florida alleging that guests at Universal Epic Universe sustained “severe and permanent injuries” after riding the Stardust Racers roller coaster. Each complaint alleges negligence against Universal and Mack Rides, and strict product liability against the ride designer.
The lawsuits were filed two months after Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, 34, died after becoming unresponsive following a ride on the same roller coaster. An autopsy found he died from “multiple blunt impact injuries,” the Chief Medical Examiner for Orange and Osceola counties said in a statement, ruling the death an accident.
