Green Day will perform at the Super Bowl opening ceremony next month, with the band set to take the stage ahead of the game.

The American rock group has been an outspoken critic of United States President Donald Trump in recent years. Last summer, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong criticised Trump’s administration during a set at Download Festival in the UK, telling the crowd: “It’s up to us to fight back.”

He also referenced Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan by changing a lyric in the band’s song American Idiot, singing: “I’m not part of the Maga agenda.”

Reacting to the Super Bowl announcement, Armstrong said the band were “super hyped,” adding: “Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!”

Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny has already been named the headliner for the Super Bowl half-time show. His booking drew mixed reactions after he said in an interview with i-D magazine that he was avoiding the US on his world tour over concerns that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents might conduct raids on fans attending his concerts.

Asked about Bad Bunny’s selection, Trump said on NewsMax’s Greg Kelly Reports: “I’ve never heard of him. I don’t know who he is.”

Super Bowl 60 will be held in Santa Clara, California, on February 8.

Trump attended last year’s Super Bowl to watch the Kansas City Chiefs face the Philadelphia Eagles, but it is not yet known whether he will be present this year.

Recent half-time performers have included Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna.
