On a frigid January morning in Minnesota, Renee Nicole Good’s life ended in a burst of gunfire — and her family says the public still doesn’t know enough about what happened. As mourning turns into a push for accountability, newly released autopsy details are sharpening the questions surrounding Good’s death and the federal response that followed.

Good, 37, was found inside her vehicle with four apparent gunshot wounds on Jan. 7. The mother of three had just dropped her 6-year-old child off at school before what her family describes as a fatal encounter involving federal immigration agent Jonathan Ross, an ICE officer who joined the agency in 2015 and was serving in 2025 as a firearms instructor and a member of the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Good was driving home in a maroon Honda Pilot with her committed partner, Becca Good, when they came upon a group of ICE agents. According to a Minneapolis police and fire department incident report obtained by the family’s attorneys, Good was discovered unresponsive in her vehicle with blood on her face and torso at around 9:42 a.m. local time the morning she died.

A Chicago-based law firm representing Good’s family has begun publicly releasing information from its private investigation, including preliminary findings from an independent autopsy commissioned at the family’s request. The firm says it is sharing details in the name of “continued transparency with the public on this tragedy,” a commitment it describes as central to its advocacy for Good and her loved ones.

Independent Autopsy: Three Bullet Paths, One Fatal Wound

The independent autopsy was conducted by a medical pathologist described by the family’s legal team as highly credentialed. Its preliminary conclusions lay out three clear gunshot wound paths — and a fourth injury consistent with a firearm graze.

According to the pathologist:

  • One bullet struck Good’s left forearm, causing soft tissue hemorrhage.
  • Another traveled through her right breast, without penetrating major organs.
  • The fatal gunshot wound entered the left side of her head near the temple and exited the right side of her head.
  • A fourth wound was described as a graze wound consistent with a firearm injury, with no penetration.

The pathologist concluded that the gunshot wounds to the breast and left forearm were not immediately life-threatening.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released its autopsy results to Good’s family or their legal team.

Family’s Attorneys Point to Video and “Totality of Circumstances”

For attorneys representing the family, they say releasing medical details is about more than cause of death — it’s about accountability and how force was used.

Lead attorney Antonio M. Romanucci said the investigation is ongoing, but added that the legal team believes the evidence will support its case. In a statement, Romanucci said video evidence from Jan. 7, 2026 is “clear,” especially when assessed through “reasonable policing” standards and the “totality of circumstances,” and pledged continued advocacy for Good’s family.

What Officials Have Said — and What Remains Unclear

Ross remained on the scene after the shooting, according to the family’s legal team. About 15 minutes later, he was taken to a federal building. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said on Jan. 14 that Ross was taken to the hospital that day and suffered internal bleeding in his torso, but declined to answer further questions about the incident. A Minneapolis FBI representative said, “No further information is available for release at this time in accordance with DOJ policy.”

Ross has not been accused of a crime.

Even so, use-of-force experts have publicly criticized the incident. “In order to use deadly force, your life or someone else’s life must be in immediate danger,” said Chris Burbank, a former Salt Lake City police chief who said he does not believe Good posed such a risk to Ross.

Federal officials have said the FBI would handle the inquiry and argued Minnesota authorities have no jurisdiction. In response, State Attorney General Keith Ellison called for “a fair, transparent investigation of all of the facts.”

Family Rejects “Domestic Terrorist” Label

The Trump administration has claimed Good was a “domestic terrorist” who deliberately sought to kill ICE agents with her vehicle. Good’s mother, Donna, and father, Tim Ganger, along with her four siblings, rejected that characterization, saying Good “was a beautiful light of our family and brought joy to anyone she met,” describing her as relentlessly hopeful and optimistic.

“What Comes Next”

As protests, vigils, and political debate continue, Becca Good is trying to navigate life after the loss — and to raise their son.

In a statement, Becca spoke about grief and purpose: “I am now left to raise our son and to continue teaching him, as Renee believed, that there are people building a better world for him,” she said.
