A man fatally shot during an encounter with federal agents in Minneapolis on Saturday has been identified by sources as Alex Jeffrey Pretti, the Minnesota Star Tribune reported.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the man was shot Saturday morning and later died. O’Hara described the deceased as a 37-year-old White man from Minnesota who is believed to be a U.S. citizen.
The shooting happened around 9:03 a.m. local time near East 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue, according to O’Hara.
What the video appears to show
A video uploaded to social media shows what appears to be a group of federal agents struggling with a person on a Minneapolis street. In the footage, multiple agents appear to pull the person toward the ground before gunshots ring out.
After the shots, the person seen being restrained lies motionless as onlookers react in shock. One voice can be heard shouting: “They killed that guy! Did they [expletive] kill that guy?”
Why it’s drawing national attention
The death is the second fatal shooting in Minneapolis in recent months involving federal immigration enforcement, intensifying already high tensions in the state. It follows earlier outrage over the killing of Renee Nicole Good, who was shot during a previous encounter with federal immigration agents.
In the wake of Saturday’s shooting, several political and community leaders in Minnesota and beyond have called for federal forces to be removed from the city.
What officials are saying
Authorities have provided limited details publicly as questions spread online about what led up to the gunfire and which federal agency was involved.
Newsweek said it has reached out to Minneapolis Police, the Department of Homeland Security, and the City of Minneapolis for additional information.
