A 22-year-old man has been convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, a year after Barron Trump reported the incident to London police.

Barron, the 19-year-old son of President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump, contacted the City of London Police on Jan. 18, 2025, saying he witnessed a woman being attacked during a video call by a man later identified as Russian citizen Matvei Rumiantsev.

“I’m calling from the U.S., I just got a call from a girl… she’s getting beat up,” Barron said, according to a transcript released by prosecutors. At one point, he added, “It’s really an emergency, please.”

During the call, Barron was asked how he knew the woman. He responded, “I don’t think these details matter, she’s getting beat up but OK fine, also I met her on social media, I don’t think that matters.” The operator told him to answer the questions, and Barron later apologized for sounding rude.

In court on Jan. 23, prosecutors questioned Rumiantsev about whether jealousy played a role, including his feelings about the ex-girlfriend’s friendship with Barron. Rumiantsev said he was upset because, in his words, she was “leading [Barron] on,” and acknowledged he was “jealous to some extent,” according to Metro.

Prosecutors said Rumiantsev grabbed the woman by the hair, pushed her to the floor, and shouted, “You are not worth anything.”

On Monday, Jan. 26, the judge, British High Court Justice Joel Bennathan, instructed jurors to treat Barron’s account with care because it was not given under oath and therefore counted as hearsay that had not been tested through cross-examination.

The judge said Barron could otherwise have been questioned about whether he had a clear view of what happened, whether he actually saw an assault, or whether he reached that conclusion based on what he heard. The judge also noted jurors could consider whether Barron’s perception might have been influenced by his friendship with the woman.

The judge explained that hearsay evidence can be considered, but jurors should be cautious and not base a conviction mainly on that evidence.

The jury ultimately found Rumiantsev guilty of assault, BBC and CNN reported on Wednesday.

He was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice after writing to the woman from prison following the Jan. 18, 2025, incident and asking her to withdraw her allegations.

Rumiantsev was found not guilty of one count of rape and intentional strangulation, and not guilty of another count of rape and assault related to allegations from November 2024.

Jan. 18, 2025, was also a significant date for Barron and his family in the United States, as the Trumps traveled from Palm Beach to Washington, D.C., for a weekend of events leading up to Donald Trump’s second inauguration.

Barron, 18 at the time, had largely stayed out of the political spotlight during and after his father’s first term in office.

During the ceremony, he was seen smiling and clapping, speaking with Elon Musk, talking with Jeff Bezos, and greeting outgoing President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
