Couple Left ‘Shocked’ After Discovering Wild ‘Invisible String’ Linking Them 24 Years Before Getting Married 

In 2024, as Jasmin Sanders and Lauren Retica got ready to become parents, they did what a lot of expecting couples do: they pulled out old photo albums and revisited their own childhoods.

Retica’s early modeling photos were full of fun surprises — but one detail stopped them both cold. In one shot, 4-year-old Retica is modeling a bright pink fairy costume.

“When we turned onto the photo of me in the fairy costume, Jasmin immediately recognized it, and audibly gasped, saying, ‘I had this costume,’” Retica, 30, says.

The twist: Sanders had worn that exact same pink costume when she was 3, never imagining the little girl featured in the ad would one day grow up to be her wife.

When they later showed the photo to Sanders’ mother, she was stunned too. She even remembered searching everywhere for that costume after spotting Retica in the advertisement back in 1999.

“We were so shocked and a bit emotional,” Retica says. “It’s such an exciting thing to discover and feels like a special level of connection we didn’t know we had.”

What made the coincidence even sweeter was how unexpected it was for Retica herself. Her mom had always described her as a “tomboy” who hated dresses — yet for that shoot, toddler Retica apparently didn’t protest at all.

“Much to my mother’s surprise, I apparently hopped straight into the dress with no fuss, something I had never done before,” Retica says.

Moments like that are part of what led the couple to believe in the “invisible string” idea — that certain connections in life feel quietly guided, as if people are being linked long before they realize it.

Nearly 17 years after both girls wore the fairy costume, they matched on Tinder and, as they put it, have been inseparable ever since. In 2023, they swapped the pink wings and dress for white gowns when they got married.

“I think it’s a really special thing to think about having a connection with someone, who you will later in life meet and fall in love with,” Sanders, 29, says. “I think I was always meant to meet Jasmin at some point in our lives, and our story tells me the universe was linking us together long before we met.”

Now, with their daughter 18 months old, Retica says she can’t help but look back and feel like every turn in her life led her to the family she has today.

“I feel like all the steps I chose to take in my life lead me to them both, which is where I was always meant to end up,” she says.

And when she thinks about the future, her hope is simple: that her daughter experiences the same kind of well-timed love and luck.

“My greatest hope for our daughter is that she will be afforded the same blessing of fate, love and timing in her life, and that I can one day watch the joy it brings to her life, the way it has mine.”
