President Donald Trump called Savannah Guthrie amid the ongoing search for her mother, Nancy Guthrie, who has been missing since late January.

At the end of Trump’s interview for an NBC News Special Report on Wednesday, Feb. 4 (airing at 6:30 p.m. ET), anchor Tom Llamas disclosed that Trump, 79, had spoken with Savannah, 54, by phone. Llamas said the president offered “words of support” to Guthrie and her family as they continue searching for Nancy.

According to NBC News, Trump was aware of how close Guthrie is with her mother and told the family that any resources needed would be made available.

Nancy, 84, was last seen at her home in Arizona on Saturday, Jan. 31, at around 9:30 p.m. local time, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD). Authorities launched an urgent search the next day after she was reported missing around 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1.

Trump had indicated earlier that he intended to reach out. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday, Feb. 3, he called the situation “terrible,” and said, “I’m going to call her later on.” He also offered federal assistance to Arizona law enforcement involved in the search.

“It’s a terrible thing,” he added. “I always get along well with Savannah. Very unusual situation, but we’re going to find out.”

The call came despite a history of public criticism. During a 2020 rally, Trump described Guthrie as a “crazed lunatic” and accused her of “screaming questions” while she moderated an NBC News town hall ahead of that year’s election.

On Tuesday, Feb. 3, the White House also posted about Nancy’s disappearance on its official Instagram account, noting that the search remained active and asking the public to provide any information to authorities by calling 911. The message added that “prayers are with the Guthrie family” and expressed hope for Nancy’s safe return.

On Monday, Feb. 2, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy’s home was being treated as a “crime scene” and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.

“We don’t need another bad, tragic ending. We need some help,” Nanos said.

He added that Nancy has physical ailments and needs medication, warning that missing it for 24 hours “could be fatal.” He also said investigators do not believe she left on her own.

That same night, Savannah addressed her mother’s disappearance in an Instagram post, thanking supporters and encouraging prayers.

“we believe in prayer. we believe in voices raised in unison, in love, in hope. we believe in goodness,” she wrote. “we believe in humanity. above all, we believe in Him.”

She continued, “thank you for lifting your prayers with ours for our beloved mom, our dearest Nancy, a woman of deep conviction, a good and faithful servant. raise your prayers with us and believe with us that she will be lifted by them in this very moment.”

Savannah also quoted Isaiah 26:3: “‘He will keep in perfect peace those whose hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.’ a verse of Isaiah for all time for all of us.”

“Bring her home,” the post’s caption concluded.

Days later, Nanos provided another update in an interview with NBC’s Liz Kreutz that aired on the Today show on Wednesday, Feb. 4.

“We have nothing else to go on but the belief that she is here,” he said. “She’s present. She’s alive, and we want to save her.”

The PCSD described Nancy as a woman with brown hair and blue eyes, standing 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighing around 150 lbs. Authorities have not confirmed what she was wearing when she went missing.

NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas airs at 6:30 p.m. ET. A separate segment of Trump’s interview is also set to air during NBC’s Super Bowl LX Pregame Show on Sunday, Feb. 8.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone with information to call 520-351-4900.
