Florida investigators are examining the death of a 76-year-old Vero Beach woman after her grandson allegedly made detailed admissions during questioning, even as prosecutors have not filed homicide charges and the inquiry remains active.

The woman was found dead during a welfare check at her home on Fairways Circle on the evening of Feb. 2. Family members had contacted authorities after being unable to reach her, according to reports citing the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

The deceased was later identified as Patricia Dibella. Deputies encountered her grandson, 29-year-old Nicholas Ivey, outside the residence when they arrived. A responding officer entered the home and found Dibella lying on a bed in the master bedroom, where she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say Ivey told them his grandmother was dead inside and later described killing her during an altercation. According to reporting that cites law enforcement records, he claimed Dibella came toward him with a knife and that he responded by snapping her neck and striking her. Authorities have emphasized that these statements have not yet been tested in court.

Ivey was taken into custody early the following morning, but only on theft-related charges. Court records show he was arrested on allegations including grand theft auto, unlawful possession of stolen credit cards, and fraudulent use of a credit card. He has not been charged in connection with Dibella’s death.

Investigators allege that after the woman died, Ivey moved her body and cleaned parts of the home. Authorities also say he later used her vehicle and credit cards to make purchases, including cigarettes and beer.

The sheriff’s office has said the death investigation is ongoing and that further forensic analysis and review of evidence are underway. Officials have not announced when, or if, additional charges may be filed.
