A man convicted of killing his former partner in southern England has been sentenced to life in prison, after court proceedings that later drew public attention because of comments he made during his arrest.
Robert Richens, 35, received a life sentence with a minimum term of 16 years and one month following the death of Rachael Vaughan, 40, at her home in Oxfordshire in May 2025. Authorities confirmed the sentence on Friday after Richens had earlier pleaded guilty to murder.
During the investigation, police body-worn camera footage captured moments from Richens’ arrest that were later reported by British media. In the video, recorded shortly after police arrived, Richens is seen crying and expressing distress about missing the future release of a popular video game. Officers questioned the remark, and Richens responded that he expected to receive a life sentence.
The footage also recorded Richens acknowledging responsibility for Vaughan’s death. Police later presented the video as part of the case materials reviewed during court proceedings.
According to official statements, officers were alerted early on May 30, 2025, after Richens called emergency services to report that a woman was unresponsive at a residence. Vaughan was pronounced dead at the scene. Richens was arrested later the same day and formally charged the following day.

Prosecutors told the court that Vaughan suffered extensive injuries during the attack. They alleged Richens assaulted her over a sustained period and then remained at the property for several hours before contacting authorities. The court was told the pair had been in an intermittent relationship since 2023.

In a statement released after sentencing, a senior investigating officer said Vaughan had been killed in her own home and described the impact on her family as devastating. The officer said the sentence reflected the seriousness of the crime and marked the conclusion of a lengthy investigation.
Further legal appeals were not immediately indicated, and officials said the case is now closed from an investigative standpoint.
