Instead of leaving urgent care with a cast, Anais Berman walked out with something far shinier.

The 27-year-old slipped on black ice and landed hard on her wrist while heading home in Brooklyn on Wednesday, Feb. 11. She didn’t think it was broken, but decided it was worth getting checked out the next day. Her boyfriend of two years, Justin Wright, 31, booked her an appointment at a Downtown Brooklyn CityMD — and quietly set a plan in motion.

Wright had known since last year that he wanted to propose. For months, Berman’s brother had been holding onto the engagement ring for him while he waited for the right moment.

“Most of my good ideas happen last minute,” Wright said. “You have a gut feeling of when it’s the right thing to do.”

On the morning of Thursday, Feb. 12, Wright picked up the ring — a 3.47-carat fancy vivid yellow canary diamond — before heading to the appointment. He arranged for an evening visit and shared his idea with the CityMD team. After some back and forth, they agreed to help.

Berman didn’t suspect a thing. She thought it was simply sweet that Wright made the appointment and wanted to stay in the room with her instead of waiting outside.

Later, a doctor, a medical technician and a nurse entered to review her X-ray results. Berman was briefly confused by how many people had come in for what seemed like a minor injury — until the doctor turned the computer screen toward her.

Displayed was an image of a left hand wearing a diamond ring on the ring finger.

“I turned to Justin and I was beyond shocked,” Berman said. “I couldn’t have been more surprised.”

That’s when Wright got down on one knee and proposed.

“It did not feel real,” Berman said. “Justin pulled it off in the most amazing way. I’ve never been so surprised in my life.”

CityMD’s chief operating officer, Navienne Dunkley, said the team was honored to play a part in the moment, calling the proposal a unique idea and wishing the couple “a lifetime of health and happiness.”

Berman and Wright grew up about 30 minutes from each other in Southern California, but didn’t meet until 2024, when a mutual friend introduced them in New York City. They started dating in March, and Wright said he loved her just two months later — after an accident brought them even closer.

Wright was involved in a serious bike crash that left him unconscious for roughly 16 hours. When he woke up in a Queens hospital, Berman was by his side. She stayed the night with him, and when they returned to his apartment, he told her, “I love you — please don’t leave me.”

“Ever since then, we’ve been inseparable,” Berman said.
