The family of convicted offender Ghislaine Maxwell said they were shocked by the arrest of Prince Andrew, who was detained on suspicion of misconduct in public office as part of an investigation connected to alleged communications with Jeffrey Epstein.
Andrew was taken into custody on Thursday, Feb. 19, and later released. He has not been charged with any crime. Authorities are examining claims that he may have shared confidential information with Epstein during his tenure as the United Kingdom’s trade envoy.
Officials clarified that the arrest was unrelated to any allegations of misconduct. Andrew has previously denied any wrongdoing regarding his association with Epstein.
In a statement posted on X, Maxwell’s family described their reaction to the development.
“We are astonished to see Andrew Mountbatten–Windsor arrested over alleged misconduct in public office tied to material from the so-called Epstein ‘Files,’” the statement read. “He is entitled to the presumption of innocence and a fair process — principles our sister Ghislaine never received. We call for transparency, evidence, and equal treatment under the law, rather than judgment driven by media or political pressure.”
Maxwell, identified by a jury as Epstein’s longtime associate, is serving a 20-year prison sentence following her conviction on trafficking charges.
Andrew was detained on the day of his 66th birthday at his residence on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, where he currently lives. He was released roughly 11 hours later.
Police also confirmed they conducted a search of Andrew’s former residence in Windsor.
In response, King Charles issued a statement acknowledging the situation.
“I have learned with deep concern of the news regarding Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and the suspicion of misconduct in public office,” Charles said. “This matter will now proceed through a full, fair, and proper investigation by the relevant authorities.”
He added, “As I have stated before, they have our full support and cooperation. The law must take its course.”
