DELTONA, FL — A Volusia County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering after a harrowing close-range ambush on Monday night where his body-worn camera took a direct hit from a suspect’s bullet, likely preventing a fatal chest wound. The shooter, who had reportedly consulted an AI chatbot about “Stand Your Ground” laws prior to the attack, fired 12 rounds at responding officers during what began as a routine property damage investigation.

The Ambush on Candler Drive

The incident unfolded on March 2, 2026, when Deputy Jose Rivera—a U.S. Army veteran who joined the force in 2023—and a newly graduated deputy arrived at a residence on Candler Drive in Deltona. The deputies were investigating a report of a damaged vehicle when the suspect, identified as Luis Diaz Polanco, opened fire without warning.

“The bullet hits the body camera dead center,” Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood confirmed during a press briefing. “It takes a round through the body camera — which we believe then ricochets through his shoulder. Another shot hits his leg.”

Despite his injuries, Rivera managed to return fire six times while retreating toward his patrol vehicle. Forensic evidence at the scene suggests a predatory pursuit; Sheriff Chitwood noted that the trail of shell casings indicates Polanco followed Rivera down the driveway while continuing to fire.

Investigation Reveals AI Premeditation

The investigation into Polanco’s motives has uncovered a disturbing digital trail. Authorities revealed that weeks prior to the shooting, Polanco utilized a Spanish-language AI chatbot to query the legality of lethal force against trespassers.

According to Sheriff Chitwood, the suspect specifically asked if he could legally kill someone who entered his property. The AI reportedly provided a definition of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law. During subsequent questioning, Polanco allegedly admitted to investigators that he had every intention of shooting the deputies the moment they arrived at his home.

“AI then gave him a definition of Stand Your Ground and Florida law,” Chitwood said. “When the deputies came up to the house, he had every intention to shoot them.”

Rescue and Recovery

Body-camera footage released by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office (VSO) captures the frantic moments following the exchange of gunfire. Fellow deputies are seen applying a tourniquet to Rivera’s leg before transporting him in a patrol car to a nearby hospital, bypassing a wait for an ambulance to save critical minutes.

Rivera, a father of three, was released from the hospital on Wednesday. While he faces a road to recovery regarding his shoulder and leg wounds, officials say his spirits remain high.

Polanco remains in custody at the Volusia County Branch Jail. Prosecutors are expected to leverage his AI search history as evidence of premeditation during the upcoming trial.
