VENTURA, Calif. — Pop icon Britney Spears was arrested Wednesday night in Southern California on suspicion of driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs. The 44-year-old singer was apprehended by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) following reports of a vehicle traveling at high speeds and swerving across lanes on a major freeway.
The incident began around 9:30 p.m. on March 4, 2026, when authorities received 911 calls regarding a black BMW 430i driving erratically on U.S. 101 near Newbury Park. Officers located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop after it exited the freeway at Westlake Boulevard.
According to a CHP statement, Spears, the sole occupant of the vehicle, displayed clear “signs of impairment” during the stop. She was asked to perform a series of field sobriety tests, which she reportedly failed.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Following the roadside investigation, Spears was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for a mandatory blood draw to determine the exact levels of intoxicants in her system. The results of those chemical tests are currently pending.
Records from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office show Spears was booked into the Ventura County Main Jail at approximately 3:00 a.m. on Thursday. She was processed and released three hours later, at 6:00 a.m., under a “cite and release” procedure.
Spears is officially scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on May 4, 2026. While formal charges are being finalized by the District Attorney’s office, the arrest was logged under California Vehicle Code section 23152(g), which pertains to driving under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs.
Family and Representatives Respond
A representative for the “Toxic” singer issued a candid statement to the media on Thursday, describing the arrest as a wake-up call for the star, who has lived under intense public scrutiny since the 2021 termination of her 13-year conservatorship.
“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” the statement read. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law. Hopefully, this can be the first step in long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.”
The representative also noted that Spears’ sons, Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, are planning to spend time with their mother as her inner circle coordinates a “plan for her well-being.”
A Turbulent Post-Conservatorship Journey
The arrest marks a significant legal hurdle for Spears, who recently made headlines for the $200 million sale of her music catalog and the release of her best-selling memoir, The Woman in Me. In her book, Spears pushed back against long-standing tabloid narratives regarding substance abuse, though she admitted to using ADHD medication.
Sources close to the family indicate that her former husband, Kevin Federline, “hopes for the best” and encourages Spears to accept the help being offered by her support team.
As the investigation continues, the Ventura County District Attorney will determine if the pending toxicology reports warrant further charges.
