“I’m Done with These Uniparty Traitors”: Hollywood’s James Woods Abandons GOP, Cites Republican Blocking of Ilhan Omar Subpoena

James Woods, the Academy Award-nominated actor and outspoken conservative firebrand, announced his departure from the Republican Party on Friday. Woods, a long-time supporter of President Donald Trump, declared his intention to register as an Independent, citing a lack of aggressive legislative support for Trump’s agenda and controversial investigations. The move highlights a deepening rift between the GOP establishment and the populist “MAGA” base.

The Breaking Point: Subpoenas and the SAVE Act

The catalyst for Woods’ public defection was a social media post featuring Representative Nancy Mace (R-SC). In the shared footage, Mace expressed frustration that fellow Republicans blocked her attempt to subpoena the immigration records of Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN).

Mace’s motion sought to investigate long-standing, unsubstantiated claims regarding Omar’s previous marriage. While these theories have circulated in far-right discourse for years, Republican leadership blocked the subpoena, with Mace later confirming that “it was Republicans that killed my motion.” Woods characterized this as a betrayal.

Adding to his grievances, Woods pointed to the legislative challenges facing the SAVE Act (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act). Supported by Trump and pushed by House Republicans, the bill aims to require proof of citizenship for voter registration. Woods specifically targeted Senate Republican Whip John Thune, though Thune has pledged to bring the bill to a vote despite Democrats’ opposition and the lack of 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster.

“I Am Done”: A Shift to Independent Status

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Woods was blunt about his decision to leave the party he has championed for years.

“I am done with the Republican Party,” Woods wrote. “Between this and Thune’s refusal to pass the SAVE Act, I’m done with these uniparty traitors. I’m changing my party affiliation to Independent. No wonder President Trump is fighting an uphill battle every day.”

The term “uniparty” is frequently used by populist critics to describe a perceived alliance between establishment Republicans and Democrats, suggesting that both sides work together to maintain the political status quo at the expense of the electorate.

A Career Defined by Political Friction

Woods’ departure from the GOP is the latest chapter in a tumultuous decade for the actor. Known for his roles in Salvador, Casino, and his voice work as Hades in Disney’s Hercules, Woods has claimed for years that his political stance led to him being “blacklisted” in Hollywood.

2018: Woods was dropped by his long-time talent agent, Ken Kaplan, on the Fourth of July.

The Aftermath: Since then, Woods has transitioned from a full-time actor to a high-profile political commentator, utilizing his platform to defend the Trump administration and critique what he calls the “liberal media.”

What’s Next for the MAGA Movement?

Woods’ exit signals a potential trend of high-profile “MAGA” influencers distancing themselves from the Republican brand while remaining fiercely loyal to Donald Trump. As the 2024 election cycle intensifies, the pressure on GOP leadership to align strictly with the former President’s priorities—or risk losing their most vocal supporters—has never been higher.

Whether this move inspires a broader exodus of voters to Independent status remains to be seen, but it underscores the internal volatility currently defining the American Right.
